How do you sell to teenagers, a notoriously fickle but tantalisingly lucrative market? Let’s begin by imagining retail hell on earth for anyone over 30. No one knows where anything is. You can’t see what anything is. The music pounds, the ambient smell is the store’s own-brand perfume and the staff are all better looking and wearing fewer clothes than you. If you’re over 30 they’re also much boys and girls galleries than you. But, hey, if you’re over 30, what are you doing here in the first place?

Admittedly, this could be any number of stores on the high street but one chain has taken the modus mis-operandi, turned it into an art form, and provided a glimpse of a more fragmented retail future in the process.

If virtual shopping on the internet is inexorably cannibalising actual shopping, then arguably, the only way the real version can survive is by creating an experience that can’t be replicated online.

Hollister, the southern Californian surfer brand has rounded up the marketing orthodoxy and kicked copious amounts of sand into its face. It’s paying dividends. While Hollister’s better-known sibling brand Abercrombie & Fitch has been buffeted by the recession most recent net sales figures were down 26 per cent on the same period a year ago Hollister is holding up. Its UK store in the Westfield shopping centre in West London has had queues snaking outside its clapboard-cladded front right through the downturn.

The opening last month of the 40,000 sq ft flagship Epic store in SoHo has endowed Manhattan with its first real teen models destination store. The Topshop that opened in SoHo earlier this year is probably out of the price range of most 13-year-olds; American Girl, the vast “premium lifestyle” store on Fifth Avenue that sells $95 and upward dolls and accessories alongside a teashop where thousands of little middle-class girls are encouraged to bring along their American Girls dolls, targets the 3 to 8s.

According to marketresearch.com, America’s teen models population is growing faster than the overall US population. In the UK, it has been shrinking since 1995 but it’s still tempting, low-hanging fruit. Get them young, and you can siphon them towards your other brands later on. Yet apart from Jack Wills, a brand that has an invented history, as does Hollister and Abercrombie, and a similar hoody-and-sweatpants aesthetic, albeit with a distinctly British, neo-Sloaney tinge, no British companies have created teen-targeted environments. Jack Wills has doubled revenue each year, although it’s deliberately niche, with around 35 stores, including the original one in Salcombe, Devon, and a turnover last year of £42 million against Hollister’s 1,100 US stores and revenue of $1.5 billion.

The biggest British retailer in the nine-to 15-year-old market is New Look, which sells its 915 range in 395 of its stores. But while New Look uses e-mail and Bebo to talk to its young customers (its Bebo group has so far amassed 32,000 friends), in the store it does nothing to create an area specifically to target to this group. No one in the UK does, says Moira Benigson, managing partner of the MBS Group, an executive search company. And if they think they are, they’re deluded. Then again, the British teen market is increasingly sophisticated, probably more so than in the US, with the internet a key player, and vintage making a comeback, along with a Camden Market-type atmosphere.

As it happens, the Hollister Epic store does have a slightly vintage-meetsCamden-meets-polished-California veneer. Not that anyone at Abercrombie & Fitch Co, Hollister’s parent company, officially pays any attention to market research. Founded in 1992 by Mike Jeffries, the Hollister/Abercrombie HQ, which staff refer to as its campus, is based in Ohio, a surprising choice perhaps, until you consider girls galleries that US clothing giant The Limited is also based there.

Press shy and regarded as something of a seer by his staff, who refer to Mike in the same reverent tones that Dorothy et al refer to the Wizard in Oz, 62-year-old Jeffries likes to think of the new Epic store as a Disneyland for teen shopping. Mike sees Hollister as an education, Hollister’s head of brand marketing tells me. He’s not opportunistic. He’s not doing this to appeal to a gap in the market. It’s more of an artistic vision. What Jeffries has really done is taken Ralph Lauren’s famous Rhinelander store and re-created it for teens.

Like the Rhinelander or for that matter Disneyland The Epic has a narrative. Staff sport bikinis or, if they’re male, shorts and waxed, worked-out chests. Giant screens transmit 77 live feeds from Huntington Pier, California; time your trip to the cash register right and you’ll get some buff surfer catching a wave right at you. There’s a secret Hollister language too, although it’s not blatantly telegraphed, because kids like to find this stuff out for themselves. The store is divided into his and her; the warrens of rooms are called shacks and cottages; the temperature, scent and music are all coordinated by a designer.

It’s also throbbing with energy and no expense has been spared the dark panelling, vast antique-looking fashion dresses chandeliers, Parisian-fronted perfume shops-within-shops and furniture have all been custom made. The staff are unashamedly chosen for their looks rather than their ability to locate a T-shirt in your size. Hollister gets away with this by advertising for fashion dresses store models and holding castings rather than interviews. There were 5,000 applicants for the Epic store unsurprisingly since the most recent ad campaign, shot like all of Hollister’s iconography by Bruce Weber, stars a store model.

I visited the Manhattan Epic with my teenage daughters as cover. Ironically, we all had a similar visceral reaction: you can’t help but be impressed by a store that has gone to such trouble with its fixtures and fittings, when other chains at this level shove everything on plastic hangers or leave it to get trampled on the floor.

The good-natured enthusiasm of the staff charmed us too. The American have-a mantra may be fake but give me insincere cheer over heartfelt curmudgeonliness a very polite friend was thrown out of the Westfield branch of Hollister recently because she had the temerity to complain about something. We all coveted the chandeliers. We were suckers for the clothes. And we all wished that the staff knew where anything was because climbing up and down those four sweeping staircases is exhausting.

Hundreds of fashionistas and designers watched today as Kerr walked the catwalk for the Australian-themed parade at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion.

Kerr opened the show, entitled Great Southern Land, wearing a flowing ivory and jade print dress from beauty designer Thurley.

She paraded a number of outfits, beauty, including a leopard print dress and nautical themed one-piece swimsuit.

Kerr ended the show wearing a red one-shouldered gown by designer Alex Perry, and was met at the end of the catwalk by teen model and male model wearing calibre suits.

Some 24 Australian designers, including Sass and Bide, Akira, Trelise Cooper and Kirrily Johnston, showed their summer collections, with bright flowing and bohemian styles dominating.

They were mixed among animal prints and metallics.

Zimmermann showed off printed dress and floral teen model swimsuits, Gorman mixed in hot pink, while Scanlan and Theodore favoured skin colours.

Models walked the catwalk to classic Australian Tunes such as Throw Your Arms Around Me by Hunters and Collectors.

Designer Collette Dinnigan said this upcoming season was a departure from previous years.

"There's been a strong comeback with colour. We have had quite of few years where it has been dark," Dinnigan said.

Dinnigan also talked about the effect of the global financial crisis, saying Australians were well-placed compared with their European counterparts, because they could adapt.

"We're a lot more open to change," she said.

Celebrities such as actor Miranda Otto, and TV host and model Charlotte Dawson watched the parade, as did leading fashion dresses editors such as Vogue's Kirstie Clements.

Former David Jones model and current brand ambassador Megan Gale, who hasn't modelled for three parades now, praised the show, and said it was nice watching rather than walking.

"It is so much more relaxed," Gale said.

Kerr's boyfriend, Hollywood star Orlando Bloom, has not travelled to Australia for this trip.

The four day event which ran from on July 23rd and 26th included a number of activities including a ‘White Sunset Party’, a ‘Caribbean Posh Magazine Party, as a the fashion show bazaar. The highlight of the event, however, was the fashion extravaganza, held at the Cultural Center on Saturday, July 25th.

Fashion designers showcased their creative ingenuity in grand style; from ready-t-wear to elegant gowns to tailored menswear. It was all about glamour and style when Baby Phat and Phat Farm by international design mogul, Kimmora Lee Simmons along with NYC Designers Roger Gary and Cesar Galindo joined forces with BRAVO TV’s Project Runway alumni, Korto Momolu, Trinidad’s Claudia Pegus, BVI’s Kristin Frazer and St. Thomas’ Andre Ettienne. Other designers the fashion show casing their unique collections were Ocie Collins II and Edwing D’Angelo who presented their menswear collections and Men Steppin In Design on St. Thomas and Per Te of Puerto Rico.

What would a fashion event of this magnitude be without models? They came from as far as Russia, Venezuela, Bahamas, Trinidad and the US Mainland and included celebrity models, Gerren Taylor of BET’s ‘Baldwin Hills’ and Sessilee Lopez cover model for VOGUE- the Black Issue.

The US Virgin Islands were well represented by female models Sianna Wynter, Jessica Millin and Stephanie Jerson of STAR Models/St. Thomas who were right on par with the international elingodels, strutting down the fashion dresses and runway and walking for the top designers at the event. They made an impression on everyone with their unique looks and exquisite grace they were joined by Kiaya Galbreath of St. Croix and male models Caleeb Brewley and Jaris Dennis of St. Thomas..

It was an exciting feeling, says Sianna Wynter, to be back in the BVI modeling at Summer Sizzle. It is my second time participating and I look forward to doing it again. I enjoyed meeting the designers, photographers, models and stylist from all over. I would like to say kudos to my agent, Leslyn Tonge, for all her hard work in getting us ready and to Terry Donovan for giving us such a unique opportunity to shine for the VI.

Standing at an astounding 5’11 ½, Jessica Millin was ecstatic to have participated in the event for the first time. She said, I was a bit nervous going into it, as it was my first real international experience and I was not sure what to expect. Everyone was just really nice and friendly and I enjoyed waling for all the designers.

How to Wear Fashion Dresses Teen Models in Modeling Contest

Bravo's latest attempt to fill the gaping hole left by the departure of "Project Runway" is "Launch My Line," a reality series that pairs10 professionals who dream of launching their own fashion dresses lines with 10 established fashion designers, with the teams of two competing for both glory (the winning "professional" gets their line launched) and cold, hard cash (the established designer in the pair gets $50,000).

The hourlong show's various permutations and personalities have been rumbled about for months (first under the title "Celebrity Sew-Off"), but on Monday the full cast of modeling contest and judges was announced, and anyone with even a casual knowledge of the Los Angeles style scene will probably recognize a name or two from the SoCal-heavy list.

Twin Canadian designers (in my estimation, that description alone qualifies them for a reality show) DanRage_hosts and Dean Caten (of Dsquared) are the co-hosts, with local retailer Lisa Kline as one of the judges and Scoop boutique co-founder Stefani Greenfield as the other.

Eight of the 10 contestants and nine of the 10 established designers currently hang their hats in the Los Angeles area. We'll spare you the whole list but thought we'd point out a couple that caught our eye: fashion teen models scribe Merle Ginsberg, who used to sit a lobbed Louboutin's distance away from me at Fairchild Publications' West Coast offices, where she worked for W magazine and Woman's Wear Daily, and perennial hat-wearing fashion week fixture Patrick McDonald.

Also in the mix are an architect, an event planner, a choreographer, a stylist and a DJ. With that kind of lineup, it looks like the cast could build and launch a viable Los Angeles Fashion Week all by itself.

Young men in skinny jeans and the latest sneakers and T-shirts line up at top fashion houses hoping for a flush catwalk job.

At the venerable house of Ungaro on a sunny day in June, designer Franck Boclet and his trusted assistant Damien Amsallem turned up early to work for the label's 24-hour "casting" -- finding 15 male modeling with the right look and right body to carry off their new collection to catwalk perfection at Paris Fashion Week, starting Thursday.

In all more than 100 young men from London, Moscow, Tokyo, Paris and elsewhere turned up, crowding corridors and milling on stairs clutching press-books and lists of the several dozen other Paris designers casting for models that day.

"It's one casting after another," said Montreal model Felix Bujo. "You run around from house to house looking for work and eat on the hop. This is our life, travelling the world from one fashion week to another looking for celebrity jobs."

It was no go for him at Ungaro's however. Nor for 20-year-old six-foot-one design student Harvey Newton-Haydon and six-foot-three history student Jamie Conday, both fron Britain.
"This is our first try at modelling," said Harvey. "We have to get to Dior and Prada. They're casting this afternoon, but we don't know our way around."

Ungaro's Boclet first and foremost was on the look-out for twins. "There are four lots of twins listed with the modelling agencies," he said. "But so far I've found just one pair."
Why twins? "My designs are based on duality," Boclet said. "I hate people who dress as if they have a single personality. I want to show a man as a dandy in a suit and as a rocker in leather, highlight both sides of his personality."

Lining up as a duo were 23-year-old twins from Portugal, Jonathan, Kevin Ferreira de Sampaio olga kurylenko former physical education students spotted at university two years ago by a fashion talent scout and hired by Dolce & Gabbana in 2007.

The pair, who have never looked back since, epitomise the new boy on the catwalks, not the big beefcake type but a man with some muscles and a physique, unlike the chicken-chested undernourished sexually-ambivalent figure all the rage in the early 2000s.

“We plan to go back to university soon but for now have work," said one of the brothers, paid anything from a minimum 500 euros to several thousand for a show, which is way less than women models.

After marking down the twins for two of his 15 slots on offer, Boclet ushered in candidates one after another, checking their portfolios and briefly saying hello.

"No! No! No! Too Latin. Too classical good looks!" he said after waving off a couple of extremely good-looking young men. "I'm not looking for perfection. I want boys who aren't too beautiful or too ugly."

Bastien Bonizec, a tall skinny 18-year-old with a shock of long red hair, caught his eye and was asked to "try on a jacket and walk".

"Fine, take his picture," said Boclet, laying the photograph alongside other pre-selected candidates.

"Some of the boys are way too slim, they barely look like adults, but I need them to fit perfectly into a size 48 jacket," said the designer. "Others don't have thighs, they work on their upper bodies but not on their legs."

Setting the pictures on the desk side-by-side, Boclet and Amsallem weeded out faces to assemble 15 types who as a group would best show off the label's spring-summer collection.
"We've got three red-heads, two blond men, the twins have brown hair and we have a dark-haired Asian. Let's find some more red-heads," said Boclet.

By the end of the day, Ungaro had two pairs of twins and five red-heads among the 15 male models selected to sashay in the designs.

Locals wish for shot at model fame

MOOSIC America’s next top model may be from Northeastern Pennsylvania.

That was what many were hoping for as they auditioned for the CW Television Network’s America’s Next Top Model show Thursday afternoon.

The CW’s local affiliate, WSWB-TV, organized casting services call for the national reality show hosted and produced by supermodel Tyra Banks from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Shoppes at Montage, Moosic. Women ages 18 through 27 and at least 5 foot 7 were invited to try out for the show’s upcoming season, Cycle 14.

Krystal Pope, 20, of Kingston, said this was her first time auditioning for the show.

I came last year, but I wasn’t able to make it (for the audition). I had to go to work, so I actually had to leave, she said. Hopefully, I get to go into the (‘America’s Next Top Model’) house and we’ll see how that goes, get to travel somewhere else. If I could, that would be awesome.

I thought there was going to be a lot more people down here, said Mari-Lyn Normando, 21, who came from Effort for her shot at national fame. I thought it was going to be crazy like on TV and stuff.

She wasn’t complaining about the turnout, though.

It’s really good for me less competition, Normando said.

Steve Phillips, creative services director at WSWB-TV, said that overall there was a good turnout for the casting call in the Scranton area.

He added that America’s Next Top Model is one of the network’s most successful shows.

Anyone not able to attend Thursday’s casting call, but who believes she has what it takes to be America’s Next Top Model can still apply for the show online.

Tip #2 - Just as important as what type of fabrics are summer-friendly, the color of the fabric also plays an important part in keeping your kids cool and comfortable. The reason is simple: lighter colors reflect heat, while dark colors absorb it. While white may not be the best choice for playful and rambunctious kids, pastels and other light colors are great summer color choices.

Tip #3 - Layering is key! As temperatures fluctuate throughout the day and into the evening, make it easy for your kids’ bodies to adjust by dressing them in layers. Start off with a comfy cotton tee and pair with shorts or capris for daytime wear, while adding a casual hoodie or lightweight jacket as the day turns to evening.
